In his book, "What To Say When You Talk To Yourself",
Shad Helmstetter gives a wonderful treatise on how
our habits of "Self Talk" and taking responsibility
for these can help us to make dramatic shifts in our
thinking and behaviour.
The author communicates that when we take control of
what we are continuously "saying to ourselves" we can
change and overcome any challenge or area of our lives.
When we are negating something about our ability or
ourselves, "I cant...", we are using what Helmstetter
has called Level 1 Self talk which is a negating form
of self talk. Be aware of when you are using this
form of self talk in conversation, to yourself
internally, and know if you change this part of root of
a challenge, you can change the entire challenge using
self talk. Have a little faith - you're not right all
the time in your judgements, especially about your
perceived "inability" to do things.
Level 2 Self Talk is where you acknolwedge the need
for change and say to yourself "I need to..."
"I should..." or "I must...", e.g. I should
really stop smoking.
In self talk level 3, we are saying to ourselves,
either mentally, conciously or in conversation
the decision to change. e.g. "I no longer..."
"I never..." I no longer smoke. I no longer eat
chocolate. I never get drunk etc.
Level 4 Self Talk as identified by Shad Helmstetter
is that of "the better you" In this kind of self talk
we are affirming new or forgotten truths about ourselves
either as we already are, or how we know we would like
to be and have already made the decision to move
towards that ideal. In the present and with self belief
we say things like "I am healthy, and I take care of
my body", "I breathe deeply and I know I'm deserving
of health, I am a non-smoker".
The 5th level is that of the trancended person who
can talk from a level of complete unity and understanding
of their own being in terms of cosmic affinity and oneness.
This "bliss" state gives meaning to our being and is the
Self-Talk of Oneness with God, speaking with divine
connectedness.
It is recommended that one master the first four levels
of self talk to work on your time, fix relationships
and give yourself a new empowering and deserved self
image. This will help you get you life's basic needs
covered beautifully.
It is beyond the scope of this article to write out
a full self-talk script, but it should be said, that
self-talk is different from affirmations in that
you are looking at a problem, challenge, or goal and
tackling it from every angle, so as to reprogram the
thinking habits and beliefes reenforcing positive
self belief and integrating new, positive habits in
a believable and logical way.
It will cost you under 10USD for a copy of the book
aforementioned and if you were inspired by this
article, the author has no affiliation to the book
and highly recommends you study and aply it's teachings
ASAP for great results.
