Fitting Exercise into Your Daily Schedule

Isn't technology wonderful? It used to be that we had
to get up to change channels, or to go to the stacks
in the library to do research, or to get from one
floor of a building to another. Plus, the latest
medical advances help us when we develop all of those
pesky diseases-of-inactivity like cancer, coronary
disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
Today's hectic lifestyles often preclude the time that is
needed for a daily workout routine. Yet there are many
ways to find time for exercising that can help you get to
and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
1. Thirty minutes, three times per week is the minimum
you're going to have to find in order for any kind of
exercise to be effective. Look at your schedule, and
I'll bet you can find 'em! Suggestion: "Brown-bag" it
three times weekly, stow a pair of walking shoes in
your cubicle, and use half of your lunch hour for a
nice walk. Don't worry about all of the target heart
rate stuff; just get out and move right now.
2. Good news: Those thirty minutes don't have to be done
all at once! Ten minutes of meaningful movement morning,
noon, and night may be easier to schedule. Plus, having
exercise breaks instead of stuffing your face with coffee
and donuts may do tons more for reducing stress, shaking
off fatigue, and loosening the waistband on your pants.
3. Do you bore easily? Then don't get into a rut by doing
the same workout day-after-day. Discover the joys of
cross-training! One day, you walk; next day, you swim.
One day, you bike; next day, you run. One day, you hit
the rowing machine; next day, you hit the weights.
Plus, this is a good time to get reacquainted with your
inner child. Find a play activity for your weekends that
you know you'll enjoy and that will help you break a
bit of a sweat.
Remember this: Make exercise easy-to-schedule and easy-to-
perform (for you) in order to make it a welcome part of
your day. Check with your primary health-care provider to
assure that you have no health risks that could be
triggered by beginning an exercise routine. Do these
things and you'll likely find exercise to be effortless
to schedule because of the anticipation that precedes
each session!
