Staying on Your Diet throughout the Holidays

Christmas around the corner, with its own basket of those so
tempting goodies! is it going to be extra inches round the
middle now, and battling to get in shape come the new year?
Well, it really doesn't have to like that, especially if
you follow a few dos and don'ts. You will come through
still fit and trim, and have a good time to boot.

Before you go

While you might be invited to more parties than usual, you
can do a lot before you even arrive to keep yourself from
eating too much.

One simple solution involves having a quick bite before you
go. A piece of fruit, even a glass of water will do to make
sure you are not too hungry when you get to the venue. And
it does wonders for the temptation to stray toward the
desserts trolley at the party.

At the party

But even if you haven't eaten ahead of time, once you're at
the party, you can keep your calories reasonable. One way
to do so is to engage in conversation away from the food
table with a low calorie drink in hand-alcohol can add up
quickly, stick with water or diet colas. Keep your hands
busy enough to make it impossible to hold a plate as well.

If you can't resist the food table, head for the vegetable
and fruit trays first. Fill up most of your plate with these
so that you are forced to take tiny portions of the high fat
items. That way you won't miss out on any food and yet keep
your calorie intake low.

When you're being served dinner, you can avoid eating too
much by eating a small bit of everything and leaving half of
the meal on the plate. While some are afraid that they
should eat to compliment the host, you could always say that
you are just too full to eat any more, but what you had was
delicious. Or you could excuse any questions with an
explanation of wanting to watch your weight. Everyone can
understand that.

When you're at home

It is different when you are preparing for the holiday
season, making the food at home. Because you can choose
what's best for your diet. So, you can always create a menu
with low fat, low calorie dishes. After all, you are in
charge!

And to stay off those extra calories that just add up when
you sample your dishes for taste, ask someone in the family
to do it instead. You will be surprised how much they will
take to it!

If you like, you could even freeze those wonderful tidbits,
the gloriously home-hither goodies like brownies. It isn't
all that easy to look temptingly at a frozen brownie, and
you will enjoy it all the better with the family or at a
get-together.

With these tips, you may find that you can even lose weight
during the holidays because of your increased vigilance.
But even if you don't, avoiding weight gain and maintaining
your current weight is just as able to be celebrated.
