People love to watch gymnasts perform their fluid and
athletic movements, making it one of the most loved sports
in the world. Many youths join clubs dreaming of being the
next Olympic gold medal winner. People sit eagerly in front
of their TVs to watch the competitions. Only a few of us can
actually get up on a balance beam and perform graceful
flips.
An ancient Greek exercise form is the basis for today's
gymnastic events. Most competitions include both males and
females. Men practice the parallel bars, rings, side horse,
vaulting horse, horizontal bar, and floor exercises. The
women do balance beam, vaulting horse, uneven bars, and
floor exercises.
The main focus for men's events is upper body strength. The
rings are probably the hardest since the gymnast has to hold
himself up on suspended rings, and work certain movements at
the same time. In women's events strength is of course a big
part of the work, but being graceful and flexible are the
main components. When we look at athletes performing on the
balance beam we are generally in awe. Most of us couldn't do
what they do even on the floor.
The Olympic gymnastic events are the most popular in the
world. People from a myriad of nations support the gymnasts
from their countries. The United States athletes usually win
bronze, silver, and frequently the gold medals. Winning the
gold makes them the best gymnasts in the world. The winners,
specifically women, are the sweetheart of the whole country
for a few years.
Start your children in gymnastics while they are quite young
if it's something you want them to learn. It takes agility
and flexibility to make a good gymnast. They can learn these
traits to a certain degree from their classes. You can find
gymnastic clubs in most cities. They will vary, as some
promote fun, and others want to develop serious athletes.
Another type of gymnastics that was introduced in recent
years is rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic gymnastics makes use
of five objects: rope, ball, clubs, ribbon, and hoop. One
gymnast can compete using all of the objects, or there can
be teams of five. Only women compete in rhythmic gymnastic
competitions, and it is fascinating and captivating to
watch.
Trampolining has also become a very popular gymnastic
competition, and was even added to the Summer Olympics
roster. Trampolining involves competitors accomplishing
specific moves, which are then judged.
Children start training to be professional gymnasts at a
young age. They tend to reach the height of their
performance abilities when they are in their late teens or
early twenties. To be pros, these children end up devoting
their lives to gymnastics and will train everyday of the
week. If they get older and don't perform well, it can be a
definite blow to their egos. After all, they've been working
their whole lives to be the best.
If you ever have a chance to see a live performance, don't
miss it. You won't believe the beauty, grace and athleticism
involved in this wonderfully entertaining sport.
